Creating Active Communities 2019

Date: Thu, 02 May 2019, 09:00 - 17:00

Venue: The BridgeWater Hall , Manchester

Physical inactivity is costing the UK Government £8.2 billion per year and in spite of the best efforts of local authorities and others, many public health outcomes struggle to be met and inequalities growing.

To create active communities, the whole system must collaborate, creating the conditions for people to improve their physical and mental wellbeing. From policy to practice, local government, the wider public sector, the community and voluntary sector and the private sector, must work collaboratively to ensure the ambitions set nationally, regionally, and locally on sport and health policy are delivered. The challenge of scale and targeted provision, co-existing, alongside access to relevant, quality, safe, affordable, local opportunities to be active.

The need to act and not talk is firmly upon us all, to reduce organisational boundaries and truly respond to the needs of our communities. The shift towards understanding the consumer market of active and inactive audiences and under-represented groups in order to reduce the inequalities in health and wellbeing is visible, but is the system moving quickly enough?

In 2017, Sport England announced investment of £100million in 12 pioneering localities to test new and innovative ways of working, in different types of communities, responding to the need for place based approaches. Creating Active Communities 2018 will seek to explore and share the early learning of how different approaches can and are contributing to healthier and happier communities.

Creating Active Communities will build upon the 2018 Why Sports series of conferences, bringing the latest innovations, developments, and learning from within and outside of the sector. It will challenge all to consider how transformational work is delivering benefits to our towns and cities, how to attract and allocate resources to achieve better outcomes, how we are driven by consumers in order to meet their needs and how to take learning from other places and industries to advance sustainable developments.

In addition to the £100 million investment in the Sport England Local Delivery Pilots, the conference will explore other recent funding streams in relation to open and green space, active travel, housing regeneration and community cohesion. This is a must attend conference for anyone working to improve health and activity outcomes in England. You will have opportunities to network with like-minded thinkers wanting to deliver the best outcomes for their communities and will hear from the best in the industry. Secure you place here now!
