CMS Committee hears evidence from Secretary of State

The Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee yesterday heard evidence from the Secretary of state for Culture, Media and Sport, John Whittingdale on his plans and vision for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport going forwards through the next parliament in the face of an upcoming spending review and anticipated cuts.

Setting out his priorities for the department, Mr. Whittingdale clearly stated his position that The Premier League should be doing more to share the £5.5bn it receives for selling the broadcasting rights for Premier League football, clearing the way for a possible government levy on the organisation if The Premier League does not increase distribution to the lower leagues and the grass-roots game voluntarily.

In the wake of the committee's hearing on blood-doping, questions over leaked blood samples, the role of the IAAF and the implication of athletes like Paula Radcliffe in possible doping, Lord Coe is expected to be summoned to a further committee hearing in the next couple of months.
