BME Participation and 'Pied Pipers'

A study of sporting participation undertaken by researchers at Leeds Beckett University and commissioned by Sport Wales amongst Black and other Minority Ethnic (BME) communities has identified the need for more 'Pied Pipers' to break down cultural barriers.

In its list of recommendations, the study calls on Sport Wales to consider "how best to locate and then support the 'Pied Pipers' capable of encouraging greater participation within the BME communities, e.g. by providing them with contacts, small amounts of funding and assistance with bureaucracy like grant applications".

The study also recommends a need for practitioners and policy-makers to better understand the needs of BME communities so that more inclusive spaces and activities can be created. It calls for improved communication, equality awareness training, establishing countrywide forums to promote best practice and the recruitment of BME individuals to the boards and committees of sports governing bodies.
