Labour calls for flexible 'fan-fare' rail tickets for travelling football fans

The Labour Party has called for 'fan-fare' rail tickets to be introduced for travelling football supporters across the UK.

Currently a £10 administration fee is charged to alter travel dates on advance tickets, which poses a particular problem for away fans, given that the rescheduling of fixtures can occur up to as little as six weeks prior to match-day.

Under Labour's proposed scheme, however, fans would be able to exchange advance tickets free of charge. "It's about time the Premier League, broadcasters and rail companies put fans' interests over commercial interests", said Deputy Leader Tom Watson.

Jeremy Corbyn pledged to ease the burden faced by travelling fans during the June election campaign, and the party has also sought to ensure that the Premier League invests 5 per cent of its television rights income into football at the grassroots level.
