In Parliament last week, Robert Goodwill (Minister of State in the Department for Education) highlighted the achievements of the £600 million funding for primary schools ring fenced by the Conservative government.

Goodwill stated: 'We know that this funding is making a big difference, with 84% of schools reporting an increase in the levels of participation in extra-curricular activities. We encourage schools to use their funding to support more pupils to take up sport, and many schools use their funding to target specific groups, including girls and the least active.'

Expanding on this, the Minister of State announced that revenue from the soft drinks industry levy would be used to double the primary PE and sport premium to £320 million a year from September 2017, in order to increase participation in extra-curricular and physical activity for both women and young people.
