Europe and Sport Policy

It has been a long and often acrimonious European Referendum campaign which thankfully comes to an end on Thursday. The ramifications of the vote however will last a lot longer whatever the result.

Throughout most of the campaign sport has not really played a huge part unsurprisingly, and it is hardly likely that many people will be making a decision on Thursday 23rd June based on the outcome for sport alone.

As an Independent Think Tank we have tried to stimulate a little thinking around the big ticket issues.

Hopefully you will have seen a series of articles written by Steve Lawrence. The latest posted today (https://www.sportsthinktank.com/blog/2016/06/sport-in-case-of-brexit--part-3)

Whilst there was little about Europe in the lead up to the heart of the campaign the interventions of David Beckham today and the Premier League earlier this week showed some people were willing to put their heads above the parapet.

Even yesterday Nick Keller from the Sports Industry Group spoke out passionately about why #Remain was crucial for the Sports Industry in the UK.

We congratulate the Premier League and the Clubs as well as Nick for being willing to speak out on behalf of the sector. We are open to hearing more from #Leave about the impact this would have on our sector.

Whilst passions have been running high - perhaps too high for a calm and rational debate in some places - there does seem to have been space in the sports sector to at least debate these things properly and sensibly. We are guessing at the Sports Think Tank that many of our readers and supporters will be split but we hope that we have been able to provide a few links to what our sports sector has been saying. As you will have seen from our poll (a little bit of fun and not very scientific obviously) there are concerns about a negative impact on sport if we leave.

We assume that our focus will shift once more to domestic sports policy priorities from next week - or maybe not?! If we do vote to leave we will be doing a lot more work to help our sector adjust.
