School Sport £150m - Additonal Years Funding Announced

Chancellor George Osborne announced in his Autumn Statement today that the government will continue its £150 million per year of funding for school sport into 2015-16.

The Government initially promised two years of school sport funding, and today's announcement means that it has been secured for another year.

Tim Lamb, Chief Executive of the Sport and Recreation Alliance, said:

"This is good news for school sport. We are calling for a long-term and sustainable strategy for school sport and this gives schools and sport providers a clearer focus, sense of stability and incentive to make the pupil premium funding work.

"This is a step in the right direction but what we really need is a longer term, say, ten year strategy for school sport – which would allow schools to deliver quality PE and sport provision regardless of what party is in power or what their priorities at the time might be."
