Sajid Javid Outlines Conservative Vision for Sport

Sport for the social good will be at the heart of Conservatives' approach to sport, not participation for numbers sake, says Culture Secretary.

A couple of weeks ago, Sajid Javid MP outlined the Conservatives' future approach to sports policy at the Centre for Social Justice, should they be elected in May.

He highlighted that this administration has broadly focused on success at the elite level and increasing participation rates at the community level.

He indicated that a new approach government investment will be taken at the policy level, focusing on the following three areas:

  • Improving health and wellbeing
  • Improving educational attainment (highlighting link between participation and numeracy and attention spans)
  • Targeted investment at tackling anti-social behaviour

He implicitly recognised the current approach to funding governing bodies for participation's sake was not necessarily working and outlined a ruthless approach to NGB funding which Sport England would implement.

To generate a meaningful approach to participation, he outlined four key areas:

  • Recognising and promoting innovative ways of encouraging participation
  • Participation is a means to an end, not an in itself i.e. recognise the benefits of participation
  • Targeting disadvantaged areas in urban and rural areas when funding can make the biggest difference
  • Working with the right delivery partners
