CIMSPA looks to define the term “sport and physical activity sector”

The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) is looking to explain how the sport and physical activity sector functions – and define what the term means.

According to CIMSPA, the sport and physical activity sector is viewed differently by many, both within and outside the sector. This, it says, has become increasingly apparent through the "misrepresentation of the sector during the analysis of effects of Covid-19" and the ongoing oversights in the government's guidance regarding the sector.

CIMSPA has played a key role, alongside ukactive, in lobbying the government to keep facilities open during the pandemic.

Phill Wright, Business Transformation Manager at CIMSPA, said: "Defining who we are and how we operate as a sector is vital for us to get the recognition that we both want and deserve.

"Among many other things, 2020 has demonstrated that at a government level, sport and physical activity is not clearly understood and this piece of work is the first step in correcting that.

"The nomenclature is vital for the recognition the sport and physical activity sector deserves as we continue to professionalise and adopt high standards of delivery."

CIMSPA is now asking for those in the industry to offer their feedback and help develop the definition of the UK sport and physical activity sector through "clear terminology".
