This paper summarises trends in sport participation in the community in relation to the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, the 2003 Rugby World Cup and the 2006 Commonwealth Games.
The new strategy aims to address the fundamental challenges facing sport, and particularly community sport, in England. As such it features a significant shift in focus and direction.
The Department of Health (DH) asked the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE or the Institute) to produce public health guidance on the promotion and creation of physical environments that support increased levels of physical activity.
This report examines the existing effort and resources that go into sport in England, the effectiveness of deployment, and the potential for improvements and/or increased resources – so that everyone has opportunities to participate.
